The Benefactor

The god of the community and acting in the interests of the greater good. Still followed in Tenetria to this day, thanks to some of the nation's settlers originally coming from there the Benefactor is also one of the main gods worshipped in Gari.

To worship the Benefactor is to put one's community before oneself and work to improve it. Church services tend to be more communal affairs with participants typically sitting around and all getting involved in, say, trying to find ways in which they can help one another.

Thematic Elements

Leading Element: Belonging
Lesser Element: Discovery
Opposing Element: Instinct

Tenets

  • The community is greater than any individual, Strive to better the community, not the self.
  • One individual's weakness is another's strength. A strong community leaves none of its own weaknesses unchecked.
  • To be divided is to invite ruin. A community that stands together shall never fall.
  • Any action is appropriate if it is carried out for the greater good.

Known Heresies/Schisms

  • The biggest split in Benefactor worship is in different people's understanding of what constitutes “the greater good”. For instance, in Gari they tend to view the greater good from a fairly utilitarian point of view, hence their laws which can sometimes give no punishment in response to a serious crime because there is no risk of reoffending. By contrast, in Tenetria they see the greater good as a more complicated notion which takes more factors into account, hence their laws which in a similar situation will punish a crime in a manner they deem appropriate, because they see the greater good as including the morale impact of people seeing a crime go unpunished.
