Tellua

Occupying lands immediately to the West of Falgarias, the Republic of Tellua is a long-standing neighbour that has existed almost as long as Faltur. The nation was larger until a fire consumed much of their main city, which set them back long enough for their borders to shrink considerably once more.

Culture

Emphasis in Tellua is on equality between its people - all citizens are considered as worthy and useful as one another regardless of what they may have to contribute. Be it sculpture or grain, all are expected to produce what they can and bring it to the representatives of the state, who then see that it is distributed among those who need it, or who have been legally mandated to receive it via a vote.

An exception to this is those who produce context-specific things, such as architects and mechanical engineers. Such people instead wait until a time that the representatives of the state call upon them to put their talents to use.

Outsider Description: Creepy ballot drones

Genus Demographics

Much of the population of Tellua is Ornadi, although there are a number of Humans too, and occasionaly examples of the other Genera.

Naming Convention

People in Tellua have a first name and a family name, and never any middle names. For some reason, it is traditional for one's first name to be taken from some element of nature, be it a flower, a season or an animal. If it is an animal, it is considered inappropriate for it to be an animal which may be associated with any of the Genera besides one's own.

Examples:

  • Rain Fletcher
  • Summer Birch
  • Hawk Carter (as the name of an Ornadi)

Governance

Tellua is a democracy. From the age of 16 its people can count as citizens. All citizens may raise matters on which to vote, and all citizens may then vote in a weekly process. A number of elected representatives of the state handle the administration, including hearing the matters raised and filtering out any which seem disruptive (though they are not allowed to remove motions that, say, call for new representatives to be elected in their place).

The elected representatives are also responsible for collecting and handing out the produce of the citizens and ensuring that it is sensibly distributed. Matters raised and voted on may include particular allotments of particular resources to particular people or groups.

The current laws of Tellua make common crimes such as murder of a citizen, theft from a citizen and destruction of the property of a citizen illegal. In addition, accusing a citizen of being lesser or less important than someone else is also illegal.

Those who break the law face a vote of the citizens to decide their fate. If they are found guilty then if they were a citizen they are stripped of their citizenship and no longer have either the protection of the law nor the right to vote. If they were not, a further vote decides on the severity of punishment, from exile to death. Those executed following legal proceedings are provided to the representatives of the state for distribution, usually as medical cadavers.

Religion

There is no official state support of religion, given that it does not meaningfully intersect with the culture or politics. Whilst there are those who worship their gods, their churches must put forward a motion to be assigned additional resources they may need, and so remain at the mercy of the populous as a whole. As such the churches have so far remained quite small.
